All of the works have arrived safely at the gallery, so I'm already one-up on my previous exhibition :)

If you live in the LA area I would love it if you could attend and let me know how it goes.

Exhibition Info:
Cerasoli:LeBasse Gallery
Inaugural Exhibition 'Blender'
Gallery One:
Vincent Hui, Melissa Haslam, Ryuichi Ogino, Deth P Sun & Mari Inukai
Gallery Two:
Jennifer Davis & Suzanne Sattler

Opening Reception: Saturday October 11, 7 - 10pm *guest dj and open bar
8530-B Washington Blvd. Culver City, California 90232 USA

Paper Pushers @ Gallery 1988 SF

I'm in this show (my first show!) Paper Pushers drawing show at Gallery 1988 in San Fransisco. Opening August 15 - September 6 2008.

The only problem is I sent my drawings almost 4 weeks ago and they haven't arrived at the gallery yet! So in a bit of a frenzy I made a new drawing this weekend that I'll express courier to the gallery to make sure I'm still in the show!

Here is the new drawing, called 'Paper Cranes':

Drawing and website

This is one of my drawings for the paper pushers drawing show at Gallery 1988 SF, in August. I'll be putting 2-3 drawings into the show. This one is very pre-raphaelite-ish. I'm thinking of making it into a painting, but we'll see.

In other news my website is gone! Actually it's still there, but my domain name seems to be broken - it leads no where, just to an error page. It's very distressing because I don't know how to fix it. I will be needing ice-cream very soon. Until it is fixed the website can be seen at this url: http://melissahaslam.orionvisuals.com.

It's a fairly small (cute?) 9x12 inches - oil, acrylic and ink on wooden panel.

P.S. Gloves are so cute, and I finally managed to work them into a painting :)

girls vs echidnas (wip)

This is a work-in-progress drawing, I'm really liking it so far - lets hope I don't stuff it up! Those little ball shaped animals are echidnas. The little ones are pretty cute so the girls thought they might take a few of them home, but the fatter, less attractive echidnas are not too happy with the idea. The background is going to be a forest of mutated palm trees.

It's a great book - no text, just full page colour images by a wide range of artists and designers. The book is available from mag nation in Melbourne (probably other places too).

I draw that image over 6 months ago. Its very strange to see it published since my newer stuff looks looks a little different.

I also attended the conference in Sydney, mainly to hear Amy Sol speak. I've written a short report on her presentation which you can read here.

Print release announcement!

I am very excited to announce the release of my first limited edition
giclee print, Sleepy Pink Birds. The print is available from the new store section of my website. It's archival and beautifully printed on 100% cotton rag paper. The print is signed, titled and numbered with an edition of 100.

It was much harder than I thought to make a print run. There was so much research involved in sourcing materials, packaging, finding a printer, learning about colour management, and working out payment options. A little overwhelming!

Octopus!

Another drawing, I've been doing quite a few lately. A girl carrying an octopus in her apron pocket - pretty self explanatory, really!

I might make it into a painting but I don't know. Octopus are fairly over done these days. But so cute!!

Its 5am so don't expect me to say anything overly intelligent. Just a drawing of a girl, some Australian flowers and a few insects. And now, bed.

Sleepy pink birds

Sleepy pink birds. Not flamingos! They were going to be emus but it just didn't look right, so I painted them pink and they looked much cuter. Oil on wood.

Teacup Girl

A little drawing I made a year ago. I was originally going to make a series of four and sell them as gift cards through etsy. But being cursed with an inability to complete things I've only done two of the drawings, although I did manage to make 2 prototype cards with little bows and glitter and stuff. So new years resolution: Finish what I start. I might even finish these if I'm lucky.

card prototypes:

Girl with snapping flowers

Ink is hard! Once you put it on, it doesn't come off again, and you can't just go over it. This pic is mixed media - ink, graphite, watercolour, tea, acrylic, colour pencil and a touch of photoshop. I think next time I'm doing a painting, with plain, ordinary paint.

Red wine

Another drawing:

And next, some paintings. But they might take me a little while to finnish since I'm still working out the best way to paint on wood. Acrylic was driving me mad, so now its oils.

I love wood paintings.
